Editorial Evaluation:
In the publishing industry this service is also referred to as a manuscript critique, a beta read (if the service is provided by a reader and not an editor), book coaching, or a book consultation. I chose editorial evaluation to describe this because I will evaluate the material with both the eyes of an editor and a reader. You will receive feedback from both points of view.
This service identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the book. This is typically one of the first services an author will seek out when looking for an editor. There are many different reasons authors seek an editorial evaluation, sometimes they may be stuck in the middle of the book or need help developing the story arc. Other times something in the book feels off but the author can’t see it because they’re too close to the story.
For this service I provide one (1) thorough read of your book. I will evaluate primarily for content including the plot, setting, character development, the writing style and flow, and any dialog concerns of the submitted material. I’ll also point out what works well and what engages the reader. For nonfiction, I’ll focus on the overall flow of the book and how well you delivered the material to the reader. Are there sections where the material is boring? Did the material skip around too much and needs reorganization for better flow? I’ll point out if there are loose ends or unanswered questions that weren’t addressed in the book.
I also include answers to up to 5 specific questions you might have about the book. Include these questions when ordering so I’m aware of what you’d like to know prior to reading the material.
The editorial evaluation can be ordered at any stage of the editing process, however, it is recommended prior to doing major revisions, copy edits or line edits.
